Sedation Dentistry at Manor Lodge Dental Practice
Sedation dentistry uses inhalational (relative analgesia) and intravenous (IV) sedation to help you feel relaxed and at ease during treatment.

Inhalational Sedation for Children – FAQs for Parents
What is inhalational sedation?
Inhalational sedation, often called “happy gas,” is a gentle way to help children feel relaxed during dental treatment. Your child breathes a safe mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide through a small nose mask, helping them stay calm while still awake.
Is it safe for my child?
Yes, it is very safe and widely used in children’s dentistry. It has been used for many years with an excellent safety record, and your child will be carefully monitored throughout their visit.
Will my child be asleep?
No — your child will remain awake and able to talk to us. The sedation simply helps them feel more relaxed and less worried.
How will my child feel?
Most children feel calm, comfortable, and slightly “floaty” or light. Many become less aware of what’s happening, which helps reduce anxiety during treatment.
How is it given?
Your child will wear a small, soft nose mask. The gas works quickly — usually within a few minutes — and we gently guide them through the process so they feel at ease.
How quickly does it wear off?
One of the main advantages is how quickly it wears off. Once the mask is removed, your child usually returns to normal within a few minutes and can leave the practice feeling well.
Will my child remember the treatment?
Some children remember very little about the procedure, which can make future dental visits feel much easier and more positive.
Is it suitable for all children?
It works very well for children who feel nervous, anxious, or need a little extra support during treatment. We will always assess your child first to make sure it is the right option.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are uncommon. Occasionally, a child may feel slightly sick or dizzy, but this is usually mild and passes quickly.
Can my child eat before the appointment?
We normally recommend a light meal a few hours before the visit. We will give you clear guidance beforehand so you know exactly what to do.
Can I stay with my child during treatment?
Yes, in most cases parents are welcome to stay, which can help your child feel more comfortable and reassured.
Why might sedation be recommended?
Sedation can make treatment much easier for children who are anxious, very young, or require more involved procedures. It helps create a calm, positive experience and can prevent fear of dental care in the future.
