What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatments are one of the most commonly performed endodontic treatments and are used to treat teeth that have an advanced infection in the dental pulp.

Why might I need a root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment is necessary when an infection is present at the root of the tooth, in the dental pulp. This can happen as a result of a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, or some kind of dental injury or trauma. In these cases, bacteria can sometimes enter into the tooth, causing an infection and inflammation. Some symptoms associated with needing a root canal treatment include:

• A loose tooth
• Pain when chewing or biting down
• An abscess

What is the treatment actually like?

We understand that there are some common misconceptions about root canal treatment among some patients, and that many patients approach it with nerves and trepidation. Most root canal treatments will take place over two appointments. A local anaesthetic will be used so the treatment will be pain free and comfortable throughout, and we’ll carefully remove the infected pulp, cleaning the internal chambers and canals of your teeth. We’ll then use a special filling material to repair and protect the tooth from further damage. At this point, we may well also recommend the application of a crown or permanent filling in order to restore the tooth in question to full function.
