Made up of ultra-thin layers of porcelain or composite resin, veneers are applied to the front of the natural tooth to create a brand-new smile. They can be used to address several cosmetic dental issues at once, including some minor overcrowding, discoloration, and small cracks, chips, and gaps.
Veneers are a great option for patients looking to address cosmetic issues, but they are not suitable for everyone. They are a permanent solution, and the rest of the mouth needs to be healthy in order for the treatment to be safe and successful. This means the gums should be healthy, and if there is any disease or decay present in the mouth, it must be treated beforehand. Patients also need to have enough tooth enamel present so that the veneers can safely bond with the natural teeth.
The treatment for receiving veneers usually takes several visits to the practice over a 4-6 week period. After a consultation, we’ll first have to prepare the teeth that will be receiving the veneers. This involves removing a thin layer of enamel which helps to regularise the surface of the tooth so that it can better receive the veneer. We’ll then take an impression or scan of the mouth which will be used to make your custom veneers. Once ready, the veneers will be bonded in place at another appointment, setting them in place and finishing up with a polish for the ultimate shine.
Like your natural teeth, veneers require good dental care both at home and in-practice and with care and attention, they can last for 10-15 years.
