At Manor Lodge Dental Practice, we can help repair a tooth with a damaged biting surface through the application of an inlay or onlay.
Inlays and onlays are used in different situations, and on different types of teeth, but they both work to repair the biting surface of a tooth that has become damaged. Like other restorations, such as crowns, they are made off-site in a dental laboratory, and then applied here in the practice by our professional team.
What is an inlay?
An inlay works in a similar way to a filling, and is placed inside the biting surface of the tooth or the cusp tips. They are most commonly used on teeth at the back of the mouth as they are designed to repair teeth with a larger surface area – such as those used for chewing.
What is an onlay?
Onlays present a more conservative alternative to crowns, and are used to repair the tooth cusps, covering the entire chewing surface. They offer patients a less invasive option than a crown when repairing damage done to the cusp of a tooth or teeth.
