What are implant-retained dentures?

Designed to replace a row of missing or soon to be extracted teeth, implant-retained dentures are a permanent alternative to traditional removable dentures. Made up of titanium implants that are placed directly into the jaw, and prosthetic teeth that are attached on top of them, they are a secure and aesthetically pleasing option when it comes to teeth replacement.

What are the benefits of implant retained dentures?

The main benefits of this treatment are the comfort and security implant retained dentures offer patients. Traditional dentures are designed to be removed from the mouth and as such they can become uncomfortable, slipping in the mouth and even causing pain and sometimes sores to develop. Without the proper attention, traditional dentures can also cause movement and changes in the facial structure. With implant-retained dentures, all of this is avoided. Secured in the jaw, they are comfortable and natural looking, and can help maintain healthy bone density in the jaw as well as the structure of the face.

What is the treatment journey like?

As with all implant treatments, we’ll first have to find out if you’re a suitable candidate for the treatment. This is usually done with an X-ray, which will show us if there is enough healthy jawbone to receive the implants.

Once this has been done, we’ll be able to move forward with the treatment, which is likely to occur over several months and appointments. When applying the implants, we’ll first administer local anaesthetic, so you’ll be pain free and comfortable throughout. We can also offer sedation if you would feel more comfortable that way. After applying the dentures, we’ll then have to wait a few months while the implants and bone fuse safely together. During this time, we’ll be able to offer you temporary dentures to wear, or you can continue to wear your own. Once ready, you’ll return to the practice, where we’ll fit you for your personal prosthetic dentures.
